Out of province Inspection

Out of Province Inspection is a basic safety or mechanical fitness assessment that must be conducted at any Alberta licensed Inspection Facility and must be performed by a certified journeyman technician who is licensed by Alberta Transportation’s Vehicle Inspection Program (VIP).

Why is this inspection required and what does it involve?

Any vehicle you bring into Alberta — whether you’re moving from another province, or are importing from the States — must pass Out of Province Vehicle Inspection before you can register it. Your vehicle needs to be registered 90 days from the date you became a resident of Alberta.

This inspection is a multi-point safety or mechanical fitness assessment to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy, safe and meets Alberta Transportation’s standards. It must be performed by a certified journeyman technician who is licensed by Alberta Transportation’s Vehicle Inspection Program.

To get this inspection done, visit any of the Alberta Registry Agent and purchase an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection request form. You will need to provide your proof of vehicle ownership at the registry to get this form.

Once you have purchased the out of province vehicle inspection request form, you can make an appointment with an Alberta licensed inspection facility in Edmonton like Auto Imports. Typically this inspection takes 2-3 hours to perform the inspection and prepare inspection report and certificate. As per Alberta’s Vehicle Inspection regulations, we are required to inspect nearly all vehicle components including electrical systems, glass, wipers and defrosters, steering, lights, brakes, engine controls, fuel and exhaust systems, powertrain, driveline, suspension, wiring and lights, tires, body condition, etc. We are also required to make sure that the vehicle’s structural integrity is not compromised.

If the vehicle passes the inspection, our facility will issue Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Certificate. Inspection certificates are valid for 14 days and vehicles must be registered in Alberta before the expiry date. Should the vehicle owner fail to register the vehicle within 14 days, a full OOP Vehicle Inspection will be required again.

If the vehicle fails the inspection, because of some defects or repairs that are required to meet the Alberta Transportation standards, you will need to get the vehicle repaired and a re-inspection done within 10 days of the date of inspection. Vehicles repaired and presented for re-inspection within these 10 days will be subject to verification of required repairs only at a licensed Vehicle Inspection Facility. If you are not able to return for a re-inspection within 10 days of the initial date of inspection, a full OOP Vehicle Inspection will be required again.

Even though it is required by law, an out of province vehicle inspection in Alberta would still be a smart decision regardless. Having your vehicle looked over by a professional technician will let you know what problems you might expect with the vehicle and gives you the opportunity to do some preventative maintenance on it. Most importantly, it will help ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road. Afterward, Auto Imports can offer a quote to get any required work done and make some recommendations to improve the vehicle’s safety and performance. This will result in avoiding more serious and expensive repairs down the road and extending the life of your vehicle.
